The 2024 Papua New Guinea MSME and Informal Sector Study for the Australia Papua New Guinea Economic Partnership, updates the ground-breaking 2014 SME Baseline Survey. The new report provides fresh evidence on formal MSMEs, informal businesses, women in business, access to finance, business barriers and support needs across PNG, while building on a dataset that has already supported wide-ranging research on PNG’s small business sector.
Survey data collected by Tebbutt Research for the PNG SME Baseline Survey has been used in a peer-reviewed academic article examining corruption, business constraints and employment growth among MSMEs in Papua New Guinea. The article highlights how credible, well-structured business survey data can support serious analysis of PNG’s private sector and contribute to evidence-based discussion on business reform and development.
Caz Tebbutt, founder of Tebbutt Research, is a co-author of a peer-reviewed article on a lean digital and financial literacy survey tool developed through UNCDF and Tebbutt Research’s work across six Pacific countries and Timor-Leste. The article recognises Tebbutt Research’s contribution to localising, implementing, analysing and reporting survey evidence that can support better development outcomes in the Pacific and beyond.
Tebbutt Research worked with a World Bank Group regional study on trade facilitation challenges for women traders and freight forwarders in the Pacific, conducting survey rollout and preliminary analysis in Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. The published report provides practical evidence on border processes, access to information, consultation, electronic systems and gender differences in trade experiences.
